The environment

Ecological design and technology feature throughout the buildings: the villas will use high levels of insulation and will be built into the hill for earth-sheltering; underground passive solar collectors will help heat and cool the buildings. which also use passive ventilation and solar water heating technology.

The full range of sustainable and energy-efficient features are detailed on the diagram below:

01

Sedum roof retains water reducing run-off.

06

Solar panels to heat water.

11

Areas that are used less frequently located at the back of the building.

02

Continuous layer of thick insulation - warm inside with minimal input.

07

Doors can be opened to allow airflow to cool the building in summer.

12

Lightweight timber upper structure warms up and cools down quickly.

03

High level sun stopped from overheating building in summer by briese solei.

08

Exposed high mass of masonry keeps termperatures cool in summer.

13

Easy to understand occupant controls means equipment is only on when needed. Metering allows power, water and gas to be monitored.

04

Low angle sun in winter helps to heat building.

09

High efficiency boiler with solar pre-heat.
Quick warm-up with minimal storage losses.

05

Large southerly windows allow good daylight penetration and reduce the need for artificial lighting. Rooms that are used more are located at the fron to maximise benefits.
